Puranic Significance
- Sundarar’s Visit:
- Sundarar, a great devotee of Lord Shiva, once visited the area while returning from a trip.
- Sundarar rested near a Pillaiyar temple, where Shiva sent his Bhutaganas (spirits) disguised as robbers to test Sundarar.
- Sundarar, feeling threatened, sang a prayer, Devar Bhatikam, asking for divine protection.
- Shiva’s servants returned Sundarar’s gifts, marking this place as spiritually significant.
- Two sculptures in the temple depict Lord Shiva and Sundarar’s emotions during the event.
- Historical Significance:
- Temple is over 1,500 years old, supported by ancient inscriptions.
- The area is mentioned in ancient hymns, which declare that worshipping Muruga here cures deadly diseases.

- Worshippers believe that Lord Muruga will solve their problems, including Naga Dosha (serpent curse) and Putra Dosha (children-related issues).
- Participating in daily rituals is believed to remove the Dosha of Mars and bring success in endeavors.

- Temple Structure:
- After bowing to the Pillaiyar (Lord Ganesha) at the entrance, visitors ascend steps to reach the temple.
- Artha Mandapam holds rare idols, including a five-headed serpent worshipping a Shivalinga, Ganesha, and Goddess Durga statues from the Konguchola dynasty.
- Rajagopuram, flagpole, and a peacock statue are also part of the temple architecture.
- Lord Muruga is in the sanctum sanctorum with his consorts, Valli and Deivanai.

- A special abhishekam (ritual bath) is performed before starting family auspicious functions.
