  • Consort: Gomathi Amman (Lord Shiva’s consort).

Puranic Significance:

  • The temple has a rich history dating back to the 10th century, during the Chola dynasty.
  • Arjuna’s Worship: The name “Arjuneswarar” comes from the belief that Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata, worshipped the Shiva Lingam at this temple.
  • Discovery of the Lingam: The Lingam was discovered near the village of Karathozhuvu, where cows from Kaniyur village were found discharging milk onto the root of a Marudha Tree. After the tree was cut, blood oozed from it, leading to the discovery of the Shiva Lingam. The scar from this event is still visible on the Lingam.

Beliefs:

  • Lord Shiva is believed to grant all boons to his devotees.
  • Devotees perform Abishek and Archanas to seek blessings from Lord Arjuneswarar and Gomathi Amman.

Special Features:

  • Location: Situated near the Amaravathi River, where the morning sun’s rays beautifully reflect on the river and the Lingam.
  • Gomathi Amman Shrine: Located to the right of the main deity.
  • Marble Statue of Dakshinamurthy: A statue of Sri Dakshinamurthy, brought from Kashi.
  • Cremation Ground: Located right in front of the main deity’s sanctum, adding a unique aspect to the temple.
  • Separate Shrine for Saneeshwara: A shrine dedicated to Lord Saneeshwara (Saturn), one of the nine celestial bodies in astrology.
  • The temple is maintained through donations and grants from the local community and is administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department of Tamil Nadu.

Festivals:

  • Maha Shivrathri (February-March) is the principal festival of the temple.
  • Monthly Pradoshams and other Shiva-related festivals are also celebrated.
