Puranic Significance
- Legend states that nine siddhas (spiritual adepts) undertook penance near a pond, which became known as Siddha Pushkarini.
- Construction History:
- Hoysala Era: The sanctum and Sukhanasi structures were built, showcasing intricate Hoysala architectural features.
- 14th Century CE: Addition of the navaranga, reflecting the architectural style of that period.
- 16th Century CE: Incorporation of the Mukha Mandapa, showcasing contemporary architectural elements.
- 17th Century CE: A projection of the vestibule was added, contributing to the temple’s historical diversity.
Special Features
- East-Facing Temple: Features a five-tiered Rajagopuram (entrance tower).
- Sanctum Sanctorum: Comprises the Sanctum, Antrala, Navaranga, and Mukha Mandapa.
- Sanctum and Antrala: Built in the Hoysala architectural style.
- Sukanasi (tower) and Navaranga: Added in later periods with brick and mortar.
- Architectural Details:
- The Sanctum and Antrala are built on a square basement with six cornices.
- Idols of Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana are placed on a Hanuman pedestal.
- Idols depict Lord Rama and Lakshmana holding arrows and strung bows, with Sita positioned to the right of Rama, following traditional marriage ceremony customs.
- The style of these idols suggests they may have been added later, not from the original Hoysala period.
- Landscape Change: The temple was once near a pond that has since dried up, altering the surrounding landscape.
