Introduction

The temple thillai amman of Pattangarai blesses on the western border of the town. The Temple is believed to be 500 years old.

Puranic Significance

Madakkonar, who lived in Elayanainarkulam about four hundred years ago, did not get rich for five years after the Madathi couple got married. Madakkonaru, with the permission of his wife Madathi, married Valliyammala for the second time with the intention of having an heir. Madakkonar, who married two women’s, did not get the child blessing.

One day Kodangi, who had come to that town, went to Madakonar, where Vijayapathi, the devotee of Shiva, went to worship Shiva, and to Thillaikari, who was standing at the border, and told him that he was the child who would come and be born with the style of the next year, who would bow down with their grievances. Madakonar, who considered Kodangi’s vow to be divine, went to Vijayapathi with his two wives on a new moon day. The trio also visited Akilandeswari Ambala, the abode of Mahalinga Swami, who bathed in the sea. Then the faithful also worshiped.

They built a temple on the thatched roof of the Thillai Kali on the north side facing east on the west bank of Padangulam on the west side of the younger Nainarkulam town. The next year a boy was born to Madakkonar Madathi. Subsequently Valliyammal and Madathi both had children. The family thrived. Thillai Mahakali is standing and giving blessings in the temple. The guardian deities are Bhairavar and Sudalaimadan and Pechiyamman. Due to its temple on the banks of the river Pattangulam, sthalam Thillaikkali was known as Pattangaraiyal.

Beliefs

In the younger Nainarkulam town, the eldest children born in the family are named Thillai. The reason is that everything is said to be the grace of that potter. In this town, Pattangarai is called as the arbiter of any issue such as giving, buying, and swearing. If you really call me Pattangaraiya, the voice comes again through the voices of lizards and birds that tell me that “I am there”. Devotees pray for child boon, prosperity and fearlessness.  Devotees offer vastras and ornaments to Thillai Mahakali amman.
