Introduction
- The Jain Temple is dedicated to Adhinathar, located in Birudur village, near Vandavasi in the Thiruvannamalai District of Tamil Nadu.
- Birudur is situated 4 km from Vandavasi town on the Melmaruvathur road.
- The temple is constructed in the Dravidian architectural style and provides boarding facilities for Jain ascetics.
- Sri Adhinathar is the presiding deity, and he graces the devotees from the sanctum.
- The Sanctum Vimana is two-tiered, with four Thirthankar idols in sitting postures at the bottom and in standing postures at the top, accompanied by Chamara maids beneath the shikara and kalasha.
- The nearest railway station is Melmaruvathur, about 25 km away from Birudur. The closest airport is in Chennai.
Puranic Significance
- The temple is said to be over 1000 years old, showcasing the rich Jain tradition and Dravidian architecture.
- The Sanctum Vimana is a two-tier structure, with the bottom portion featuring four seated Thirthankar idols and the top portion featuring four standing Thirthankar idols. Chamara maids are also depicted.
- Ardhamandapam houses statues of Komuga Yaksha and Chakreshwari Yakshi on both sides of the aisle.
- The temple contains several metal idols of Thirthankars, including:
- 24 Thirthankars cluster
- Navadevatha
- Mahameru
- Rathnathraya Thirthankars
- Bhagavan Bahubali
- Shri Mahaveera’s stone engraved idol, along with a 24 Thirthankar cluster and Chadurmugi, are placed on platforms.
- The Mahamandapam in the fore chamber features a daily pooja platform with a metal idol of Moolavar and a Muhamandapam protected by an iron grill and doors for safekeeping of valuables.
- On the north and south of the entranceway, there are two pavilions:
- North pavilion: Yakshas and Yakshis shrine.
- South pavilion: Navagraha idols.
- Adjacent to the temple is an altar and Manasthampam made from a single stone pillar with four Thirthankar engravings at the bottom and a vimana at the top.
- A 16-feet monolithic statue of Shri Mahaveera, resembling the gigantic statue of Bhagavan Bahubali at Shravana Belagola, was installed in AD 2012.
Festivals
- The temple conducts daily poojas, special poojas, and annual festivals.
