Introduction

The Palaniyappar Temple in Belukurichi village, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu, is a unique and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Palani Appa.

Lord Murugan (Palani Appa): The main deity of the temple is Lord Murugan, who is depicted in a unique form as a hunter.

Puranic Significance

  • The temple is believed to be around 1000 years old and has a rich history.
  • It is said that several kings have visited this temple due to its uniqueness.

Unique Idol:

  • The idol of Lord Murugan in this temple is in the form of a hunter, known as the ‘Veduvan Kolam.’ He has his hair knotted atop his head and wears a string of Kondrai flowers (Golden shower) around it.
  • The deity is swayambu, meaning it is believed to have formed on its own.
  • The idol holds a rooster (Cheval) in his left hand, which is a unique feature not found in any other temple in the world.

Distinctive Features:

  • The idol of Lord Murugan in this temple is unique because it holds various attributes, including a Vajra vel, a Pichuva kathi in its waistband, and sandals on its feet.
  • The deity is depicted with a three-part spear (Vel) that is taller than the deity. This represents the powers of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma bestowed on Lord Murugan.
  • A Shiva lingam is etched above the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum.

People after bathing in Yaanai Paali theertham pray to lord Muruga here for getting remedy from skin allergies, bone problems and childless problems. People who practice yogasana can pray this lord Muruga to get excellent results. During Tamil month of Chithirai, special pooja is conducted as it is believed Siddhars worship lord Muruga here on that day.
