• Idol Description: The temple houses a significant ebony statue of Devi Mahishasur Mardini, standing nearly 2 meters tall. The idol features four arms, holding a mace, arrow, trident, and a betel leaf holder, and is seated in a cross-legged posture.
• Historical Connection: The temple and town of Aundh have a deep historical connection with the Pant family, who have been prominent in the region for centuries. Gayatridevi Pantpratinidhi, the current leader of this family, has adorned the temple’s pinnacle with a solid gold kalash (crown) weighing 7 kilograms.
• Cultural Link: Yamai Devi is considered the sister of Lord Jyotiba. The name “Yamai” derives from “Ye Mai,” meaning “Come, mother” in Marathi, highlighting the maternal and protective nature of the goddess.
• Local Legends:
  • Aundhsur Demon: According to legend, the demon Aundhsur terrorized the local population. They prayed to Goddess Amba, who defeated the demon, leading to the town’s name, Aundh.
  • Lord Ram and Goddess Parvati: Another legend connects the temple to Lord Ram’s search for Sita Devi, who was abducted by Ravana. In a test of Lord Ram’s identity, Goddess Parvati, in the form of Sita, was recognized by Lord Ram as his mother. This event led to her blessing him.
