Pooja at Dharmeshwar Temple

The Dharmeshwar Mahadev Temple is located near the famous Vishalakshi Temple, in the Meer Ghat area of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It has a well which was built before the Ganges came to earth. It was built by Suryaputra Yama sometime before the Ganga descent. With the blessing of Lord Shiva, Yamraj’s naming ceremony took place here. Those persons who take bath in Dharma Koop and perform pooja of Dharmeshwar are cleansed of all sins.

Description

In this location, you can find both the Dharmeshwar Mahadev Temple and the Dharmakupa Temple. There is also a significant well on the premises, known as Dharmakupa. Legend has it that this well was constructed before the Ganges river descended to Earth. It is believed to have been built by Suryaputra Yama, the son of the sun god, sometime before the Ganga’s arrival on Earth. With the blessings of Lord Shiva, the naming ceremony of Yamraj, the god of death, is said to have taken place at this sacred site.

During the period of the Mahabharata, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, one of the Pandava brothers, is said to have come to this location and performed penance dedicated to Yamraj, while keeping his presence a secret. This adds to the temple’s historical and mythological significance.
